Ireland election: Centre-right parties seek coalition deal

With less than 10 seats left to fill in Dublin’s Parliament House as Ireland finishes counting the votes from its general election, the country’s two largest centre-right parties are expected to begin their search for a coalition partner.

Projected to return with a seat total in roughly the mid-80s, it is expected that the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil parties will now require the support of one of Ireland’s smaller bodies to govern — the minimum seat requirement being 88.

The Deputy Prime Minister Micheál Martin-led Fianna Fáil, so far, has counted in with 21.9 per cent of the votes, with the Prime Minister Simon Harris-led Fine Gael trailing softly behind at 20.8 per cent. And despite the runner-up Sinn Féin — which has pulled in a promising 19 per cent of the votes — the leading parties have already ruled out a deal with the left-leaning party.

Though the results are expected to be declared late Monday, some Dubliners expressed positivity that the projections could mean “stability” in Ireland, with others openly “disappointed” that the “composition” of the government might not change.

It's so depressing that we are stuck with more of the same old, same old . As long as FF and FG continue to form a uniparty bloc, we have no chance of change for years and years to come. God help our young people. .

I did NOT vote FF, FG or SF and although the next Government will most likely be similar to the outgoing one, I feel M.Martin and S. Harris are making a huge mistake by totally sidelining SF in an attempt to exclude their party totally from participation in the next coalition. The people of Ireland that support SF have a right and an expectation to have their voices heard. This is a horrible example of how democracy can be manipulated to benefit party over country.

Basically, old people love fianna fail and tolerate fine gael, and young people don't vote, so the country is stuck in a never ending cycle of FFG until the end of time

After all the hype, we end back where we started. FFG is pulling the strings labour and the PDs inline to top up these shamers. Longer the queues for free dinners, higher the amount homeless, houses and rents through the roof, and the cronyism will be obvious fixing up the losers. Well done
