At the time, Christianity was gaining power and influence, and there was increasing conflict between Christians and pagans. Hypatia, as a pagan philosopher and a woman in a leading intellectual role, became a target. Additionally, she had strong ties to Orestes, the Roman governor of Alexandria, who was in conflict with Cyril, the bishop of Alexandria and a powerful figure in the Christian community.

Hypatia's death was the result of a mob incited by religious tensions. She was accused of being involved in political disputes between Orestes and Cyril, though there is no concrete evidence that she was directly involved. The mob brutally attacked her, dragging her from her chariot, and then murdered her in a horrific manner, which included dismemberment. Her death marked a significant moment in the decline of classical antiquity and the rise of Christianity in the Eastern Roman Empire.

It's worth nothing that some Christians writers of the time have condemned the killing of Hypatia. Socrates Scholasticus unequivocally condemned the actions of the mob, declaring, "Surely nothing can be farther from the spirit of Christianity than the allowance of massacres, fights, and transactions of that sort."

I think she would be really happy to know that she was not wiped from history. despite how her life ended and the treatment she endured we still remember her. We still talk about her work and her achievements. Remembered amongst other great philosophers.

Her story always makes me emotional. At least we still remember her.

Sad that in the past such educated women were either ignored or killed. Rest in peace.

This part of history horrifies me. I wish it never happened.

She coinvented and pioneered the Astrolabe as a tool for ship navigation which revolutionized sea travel and astronomy. She also invented the Hydrometer which is a scientific tool still used 2 and a half thousand years later.

I accidentally ended up in a coaching centre and while they taught us about the greco roman literary period, i noticed the absence of Hypatia. I was always fascinated with her and was looking forward to even the slightest mention of her life and contributions. But none came. I asked the professor later on if i could simply make a presentation on her and she said it wasnt an important topic and that it stood no relevance standing singularly. I was so disappointed and got reminded about the professional field where our deep interests and the right form of research is often neglected and strictly discouraged.

Most people have no idea when they say old times were better times.. There are no times when human beings weren't cruel..

Her limbs were dragged through the town? What a time to exist. The worst death stalks your every move.

I always think of things like this when people talk about how much better people were in the old days

We still remember you, Hypatia! Many women who value education and science still keep you in their hearts. Your end was tragic, but we will honor your memory. <3

She was brutalized, drawn and quartered and torn apart before being dumped in a common grave. All just because a Bishop felt threatened by her.
Her father also was an educator at Alexandria. This was a case where being a Nepo baby actually caused her death, even though she overqualified. She could read several languages at a time most grown adults could not. I researched he=life and death and am astounded more people don't know who she is or how important she was.

Just for historical context, these artists took creative liberty with their depiction because Hypatia was an older woman at the time of her death, not a virginal maiden

As a Christian, its exhausting how much others of this religeon forget the basic "love thy neighbor."

Another instance where if one followed their own teaching there was no call for blood. The look on her face conveys the brilliance of her mind. I pray she has the highest peace, and a quenched sense of curiosity as well. Thank you for another truly moving story & painting Ms. Mae✨

Rachel Weisz played that stoning scene so well. I actually cried for her. Poor lady. 😭

The movie is titled "Agora".

She's one of my favourite historical women! Read about her on an article in a history magazine as a teenager, and something just stuck with me. Such waste of a wonderful life due to politics and religious idiocy.
If anybody hasn't watched Agora, I highly recomend it, it's about her and christianity in the 3rd century, it's not fully accurate, but is still amazing.

Imagine how much more advanced society would be if we actually let women invent things and receive education without being stoned to death or called a witch.

That fearful look in her eyes as she probably knows what's coming next.... Also as if stonîng to déath wasn't worsé they really stripped her of her dignity too. I'd rather meet my end then have my honor taken away from me first. 😢
