Few would say that procrastination can enhance productivity yet Andrea asks what if that belief is undermining our ability to solve problems, to be more innovative and improve outcomes? Andrea describes how we need to indulge in productive procrastination to get better results.

Andrea has enjoyed a diverse business and senior management career. She has owned and operated small businesses, worked as a Project Director with Lend Lease and held economic and business development roles with non-government organisations. She is currently a business adviser with AiGroup and a creative strategist. Andrea is on a mission to help small businesses become more innovative. She is fascinated by neuroscience, creativity and all things innovative. Andrea spends much of her spare time researching her favourite topics to better understand how creative insights happen and how we can foster a thriving, innovative small business culture.

Andrea, yes you are so right about procrastination when it involves creative processes, whether they are in the arts, business approaches, creating dissertations, works of fiction etc. the danger lies in the sublimation of that process in the case we might be facing a more explicit and labour intensive challenge like mastering a musical instrument, or pursuing scientific research, cleaning out the garden shed. In these cases procrastination simply leads to mediocre results, or things not getting done. The subject - so well recognised by perhaps all of us - might be a bit more diverse than the picture (with all respect) you are painting.

Congratulations Andrea on your great work! This is a great TED Talk for all creative minds and artist out there. It really does put some of the puzzle pieces together and I enjoyed working with you on the illustrations. We procrastinated productively over these.

Insanity is when the brain runs in loops without a resolve and committing to a problem on a train of thought that’s never going to get you there is intentional insanity. Taking a break slows down the train of thought enough to be able to switch tracks.

I thought this video might actually be about overcoming procrastination. This video just provides a legitimate rationale, for those who are not procrastinating, to take various creativity boost breaks.

Walk around the city of Rome. Look at its amazing architecture, the eay each street has a purpose, the innovative sewage systems and roads. Study its walk into any square in the city and watch the countless number of people sat asleep on a bench or looking into space. Beautiful Rome wasn't built on a day, it was built on procrastination, and boy did they do it well. Now compare that to the productivity procrastination hatred systems of the modern day Europe. Those streets and buildings are unfit for purpose and will not last even 100 years

Dejà Touché Vous Vu
If good things come to those who wait...
How long should it be, before it's too late?
Of course you can only reap what you sow.
But will you just keep waiting, for something to grow?
And, how in the world can the truth set you free,
When no one can decide, on what truth to agree?
It's popular to say, two wrongs won't make a right.
But how can you be robbed, and not make a fight?
There is another day, and there is another song.
And it is possible, for two rights to make a wrong.
Well, I can't imagine there being a bigger bust,
When there's no reason to betray a trust.
So when the guilty go free, and the innocent must die,
Don't forget to remember, those who respect the coldest lie.

You sure are screwed up. Not proceeding with a project/idea, is not always procrastination. Sometimes there's a good/essential reason for it. Don't try to justify procrastination by confusing it for a legitimate reason. Without that reason, it's senseless. Not knowing what that reason is, is different. Maybe you just need to meditate/re-evaluate for a while. That's not procrastinating, and don't say it is.
