My goldfish pond froze over…

Looks like ranchu goldfish can take winter like a champ. I was not expecting this pond to fully freeze over given I have bth a bubbler and a 300 watt heating rod but it still froze even with that, luckily it seems the ranchus had no issue with it, this is promising for expanding further ponds outside in the next season and overwintering them.

My dad (gone now, RIP) used to have a goldfish pond here in Norway, and it of course froze over every winter for months at a time. I was very worried for the fish, but they survived every winter!

All you need is the water to be over 4 foot deep. Even if the water freezes that should be enough. Your pond walls are to thin, you should use an earth wall for insulation.
Another suggestion I would make is a ball in the centee of the water. Easier to pop out.
Also drilling the ice is safer. Option.

Goldfish are a species of carp and carp are INCREDIBLE at surviving incredibly low temperatures during the winter. Same goes for many fish

The fish were probably freaking out when you were breaking the ice

Never do this the shock will kill them. Boil water in a pot and sit on ice to heat a hole in ice

Luke, I heard whacking the ice like that can really be bad for the fish with the shock from noise and vibrations. Much better to melt a hole with boiling water

Had a dilemma about how to heat my mom's horses water bucket and thought to use a fish heater, but had learned (before getting one) that it wouldn't keep the water from freezing

You need probably 4 heating rods to keep the ice from getting that thick. Fish do hibernate in winter.

Ice swimming is VERY popular in Finland! The idea is you go to a sauna, get nice and warm, go have a swim in the water and back to sauna. :) The water under the ice moves and stays surprisingly warm. The section where people swim doesn't have ice in the water because ice is... ice.

try putting a dome over that pond container during the day time sun it will keep the water from freezing over

The ice acts as insulation to trap heat to keep the fish alive also they will survive in lower oxygen levels because they are going through dormancy

I don't think you should be removing the ice as they provide the perfect insulator for the goldfish underneath to keep warm. But I'm no physic student so someone provide counter point please.
