On December 24th, the Parker Solar Probe orbited our sun at a record-breaking 3.8 million miles...and survived. As we move into the new year, it has begun sending back critical data from a never-before-seen part of our solar system.

The fact that it actually survived is crazy and it shows how far we have come as humans.

"How thick did you make the shield?"
"Four inches sir."
"ARE YOU MAD?!? IT'LL NEVER SURVIVE!"
"I guess we can do 4.5."
"Yeah, that'll be fine."

The diameter of the sun is about 865, 000 miles, so the probe was about 4 sun diameters away from the sun (not nearly as close as this video shows).

it fled 6M km from the sun
at the speed of 700 000 km/hour
protected by 11cm shield
and recorded up to 1400°C

The made me laugh 😂 that was unexpected

For anyone wanting the real scale, the Parker Solar Probe was 4.39 times the diameter of the sun away from it.

Send the probe to investigate the sun during the night when the sun is switched off 😅

Scientists always suspected that the sun is hot, but now at long last it can be confirmed.

I'm even more impressed with the cameraman who followed it there so we could see.

The toughest little probe ever. Took on the friggin' sun! 💪

Fun fact: the heat retardant carbon composite material that they used as a shield (Prepreg) is also used in prosthetic limbs, aircrafts/turbines, racecars, and tennis racquets.

What's even more impressive is that communication remained intact at such a distance

I wish that I could come back to life every thousand years for a day just to see where we’re at in space exploration

This just feels like we're getting into what we've always thought impossible in sci-fi movies

“I touched the sun”
“No you didn’t”
“Well getting 3.8 million miles away from it is basically the same thing, right?”

Can we just appreciate how awesome it is we as humans did this?

“…on the origin of the solar wind…” The Sun. The origin of the solar wind is the Sun.

It would be appreciable to use the international system of units too in your videos...

We really needed a whole probe that was so close to the sun where it would've been incenerated just to callirify that the sun was indeed A star.

Because I too needed that clarification!

If it weren’t for Horacio Pagani, we probably wouldn’t have had the composite materials needed to make this trip happen. While working for Lamborghini he made a whole division devoted to composite research, which is why the Zonda was about 2600 lbs, the same as a Miata, perhaps even lighter. And tougher.
