Irish super-group Lúnasa stops by WTJU Radio in Charlottesville for an intimate live concert sponsored by the Blue Ridge Irish Music School.

Lúnasa has long been one of contemporary Irish music’s leading voices. Founded by Sean Smyth, Steeve Cooney, and John McSherry (also of traditional-fusion band the olllam), Lúnasa is named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lug. The group, which FolkRoots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team,” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and has proven its mettle time and again over the years. From the start, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over.

My favourite Irish band. But I like them as much or more when they go into the Britanny Celtic stuff, which is to me the most melodically satisfying of all the Celtic branches. A lot of people aren't even aware of this Celtic enclave and tradition, found in the north west corner of France. Hope my comment prompts investigation. You can start with the Britanny music made by Lunasa. The Scottish band Kornog is similar in their also being great at the Britanny stuff ( but curiously not so great at the Scottish ! ). There's lots of compilations and samplers of Brittany Celtique but here's a few named artists to check out : Alan Stivell, Tri Yann, Pilpazig, Youenn Gwernig.
