Kevin Crawford (Lúnasa) - Retro WTJU at Lambeth Studios

Flute and whistle player Kevin Crawford, part of acclaimed traditional Irish music group Lúnasa, stopped by WTJU on November 23, 2013, for a visit with Pete Marshall on Folk & Beyond. Kevin was in town for a concert and workshop sponsored by the Blue Ridge Irish Music School (BRIMS).

Lúnasa has long been one of contemporary Irish music’s leading voices. Founded by Sean Smyth, Steeve Cooney, and John McSherry (also of traditional-fusion band the olllam), Lúnasa is named after an ancient Celtic harvest festival in honor of the Irish god Lug. The group, which FolkRoots magazine once called an “Irish music dream team,” was formed from members of some of Ireland’s greatest bands and has proven its mettle time and again over the years. From the start, the band’s complex arrangements and unique sound reshaped the boundaries of traditional music and energized audiences the world over.

Kevin is the best. He's one of the best if not the best air player out there, his enthuisasm on everything plus his witty and enthusiastic teaching and banter put him in a class by himself.

Kevin is a delight.  I love his banter between tunes as well.  If anyone has gone to one of Lúnasa's concerts, they know that Kevin can run an hysterical stream of consciousness of anecdotes of the group's travels and much else.  They should do an in concert album that includes Kevin's comments as well.
