A Conversation with Jason Cowley about Englishness

Cowley raises an interesting point about what happens to all those who are more comfortable with British identity. But I think we need to consider how the relentless focus on Britishness (in England) as the civic, inclusive identity has damaged Englishness. The Scots won't have the same problem because their left and centre haven't abandoned the politics and symbols of Scottishness to the right. In England, the end of Britain means that we might finally concentrate on building an inclusive English identity, however unpalatable that might be to the British nationalists/unionists at Westminster.
