Unlocking Creativity & Expression in Landscape Photography

25% OFF EVERYTHING: EXPRESSIVE25

READ THIS: More is written and spoken about creativity in landscape photography than just about anything else (except gear!!) We constantly look outwards to find it, when all along it is inside us, waiting to be discovered. We know how to be creative, we know how to be expressive, but teachers teach us not to be.

In this week's video I dig into one great skill I have developed to tap into our intuition and make images with meaning and are therefore, but default, creative and expressive.

I have also started the Expressive Photographer's Community where you can speak your mind, open up and be welcomed by a group of people who share the same language and emotional articulation. Like Rush fans everywhere, it is good to know we are not alone!! :-)

This is such a great idea! I so intend to join, I'm just hesitant at this moment. I think I've finally managed to organized my photo's so that LR can find them again (however, I seem to have lost most of my travel photos) and viewing many of the others they are so grainy or blurry that I would be embarrassed to post them. So once I can learn my camera, and produce something that doesn't make me angry, I'll be all over this. Thanks for sticking with us. Love the channel

Alister, I have been following this channel for roughly two years now and love your photos, I love this channel especially your interviews! You are wonderful at interviewing your guests. But there is a reason why I have not become a member of your 'Expressive Photography' group/page. There must be something lacking in me when it comes to shooting landscape photography. When I go out I don't take photos of a location because I feel something about the scene. For me it is pretty cut and dry, either I like what I see or I don't. About the only emotion that I ever feel when shooting is, excitement. Maybe if I get some extraordinary light then I get excited to try and capture it before it vanishes. Additionally, I rarely ever go out into the field with some overwhelming feeling of happiness, joy, sadness or melancholy. I'm pretty even keel on the emotion scale. For me, at least, it would be a major struggle to put into words the reason why I photographed a particular location other than to say I found it beautiful, interesting, fascinating or on extremely rare occasions, epic. And I don't get epic around here except for maybe something weather related. So I hesitate to join 'Expressive Photography' because I really don't think I would have mush if anything to add or share.

As always great content and a reminder why your approach pays emotional dividends both to the photograph and more importantly the photographer. With curiosity and a playful approach, image processing for me has never been so enjoyable. Thanks as always.

Thanks Alister, luminosity & Contrast is epic, I want to read it again, already. As a result my photography is evolving from the technical element to looking and feeling, my images are more experiences by chance rather than intent. Love it.

Hi Alistair, just to say the the Rush song ‘trees’ is NOT about equality, quite the opposite. The maples have ruined the forest for daring to demand more than the crumbs of sunlight, if only they had left the status quo in place, they would be no better off but the rich oaks, enjoying all the sun would be left if their rightful (sic) place! The songs suggests that there is balance in inequality that if challenged can only lead to the ruin of us all.

Another great video. I shot an image last week that I'm generally happy with but something about it bugged me. Now I know what it is; it's too bright. Gonna re-edit now and maybe submit both versions to the community for feedback.

Alister, are you planing to release a video series companion to "The Color of Meaning" book? i.e as is the case for your Luminosity and Contrast book. Thank you.

Gotta love Neil Peart's use of metaphor, although his dendrology is a little suspect. 😜
