I think one important thing you missed is that Ellie 's stuff is circular. It's very distinctive, Carl's side of the bed is a square bedside table. On it, a square lamp with a square shade, square glasses and a square alarm clock. Carl himself has a very square jaw. Ellie's side of the bed has a circular picture frame, a circular table, and a domed lampshade. Also, the colours are warmer and the sunlight is on it. I can't remember if it's in the opening sequence or not, but Ellie's chair is curved, and Carl's is square. Ellie was the light in Carl's life, and Russell brings back the liveliness that carl has lost with Ellie

All of the objects related to Ellie (picture frames, furniture, appliances) are circular. Same with her character design.

When he was going down the stairs the two pictures hanging on the wall that aren't square shaped (circle-ish) are ones framed of Ellie.

Another thing to mention is that in the scene where Carl is getting ready and he is going down the stairs, the pictures of Ellie are the only circular things there.
