"Key Problems of physics and Astrophysics" (1976) is still timely 48 years later.
Older Physics books are time machines into great minds.

This book shows the breadth of expertise of Vitaly Ginzburg, a 2003 Nobel Laureate. He covers many key topics with current references to the state of the art as of 1978. Among other topics, he includes high temperature superconductivity (which would have important discoveries from 1986) and gravitational waves (which would be observed directly in 2015). It's certainly worth reading. He even speculates (p. 154) that over half of the topics listed would remain if a similar list were compiled in 2001. It's a pity that there's no opportunity for further revision as he passed away in 2009. It would be great if such a list of key topics could be identified based on what we know today. Probably it would take more than one author as physicists today have become too specialised and lack the general overview that Ginzburg had.

Ginzburg received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2003, for contributions on low temperature Physics.

I have that book! There was a communist book store in Toronto that sold very inexpensive -- subsidized -- communist books along with equally subsidized other books. I also have an interest because I worked a lot on the Ginzberg-Landau equation (look up my articles if you wish; I usually used the term nonlinear Schroedinger equation). That was not enough motivation to work through any of the problems.

Great to see the reference to Freeman Dyson.
