My mom was a nurse, and her hospital made it a rule that if you requested off and got denied, and you were then absent in the time you requested off, it counted as 2x the absences (presumably as a way to stop people from taking vacation even if their requests were denied)

However, it backfired, because people who weren’t sure if their time off would get approved just decided not to submit any forms and be absent, rather than risk submitting and getting denied and getting twice the amount of absences.

I will, and have just gone on my vacation as scheduled. I was only fired once, and they rehired me two weeks later because news flash, people arent as replaceable as most workplaces want to think they are.

Im not a nurse but a preschool teacher, i recently put in a request for ONE DAY that is 2 months out. I have never been late, never left work early, and have never called in sick at this job that i have been at for a year and a half. ONE DAY and it got denied. I cried on my lunch break.

When this happens to me I mysteriously become sick on the days in question. My doc will send a letter of absence even if I'm not sick. She's the bomb. I've called in mostly for concerts.

PTO is part of your pay. If they try to get out of giving you a portion of your pay, that's a sign they're doing other things to take advantage of you as well.

I remember getting denied all my summer requests after being a nurse at the same hospital for 15 years. I still had young kids at the time. It was devastating. Your kids are only young once. Hospitals can be so cruel to staff. I would never want my kids to be a nurse. I missed so many holidays with them.

I just want to say, thank you so much for your videos. I had to go to the ER for the first time the other day (I had pneumonia, and the first set of meds weren't working), and I was scared. Every health care org I worked at limited the number of people who could be off at the same time. Which doesn’t sound too bad until you realize that number included people who were on mat leave or other LOA. And that number was usually 3. So even though you had PTO, you couldn’t take it.

I have worked at places as well that blacked out the week before and the week after Christmas, the week of Thanksgiving and the week after the 4th of July.

They have always used skeleton staffing so there is no available coverage for PTO if people are on leave.

It is the most abusive bullshit. And it is a big problem for nurses.
