DIY Treadle Hammer: PDF PLANS for Treadle Hammer

Показать описание

This homemade treadle hammer is especially helpful for setting welds in drop the tong applications. It can be customized in some senses (ie: using larger sledgehammers, longer handles to achieve more force, etc.). There are two height settings on this hammer, for general forging or for using tooling with it. This hammer is also very space conscious for the guy who smiths out of his garage. It's designed easily enough for the beginner fabricator or avid do it yourself-er.
Below is the details outlined in the video:
This step hammer is not only cheap and quick to build. I fabricated this machine in under four hours. It cost me about $150 USD in materials. As you can see, it uses a very simple but effective two sledge hammer design that includes two height settings. One setting is for forging and the other setting is for top tooling. This design can be modified for larger sledge hammers, and longer handle lengths (based upon need).
This video includes an overview of the mechanical workings. This treadle hammer is great for two handed operations such as setting welds.
Thank you for watching. Please subscribe, as we have more power hammer and homemade machines being released in the future!

If you wanted to adjust the striking thickness you should be able to do so without too much fuss. I'm pretty sure if you changed the pivot bolt to an adjustable pin, and made a series of holes above and below the current pivot point so that you could adjust the height of the fulcrum it should change the striking point between the hammers.

Man, do you have a assembly video? I really like your design .

Now that is a great one. I think I might have to swing by some auctions and pick up some old hammers to try this.

If you make the handles longer but keep the pivot point the same you could get a lot more power out of it. The further the head of the hammer has to travel the longer it has to build up energy.

I like this. It's a good entry into using one TBH. being the sole smith I know and an Introvert(strikers are difficult when you lack friends) I've been considering some kind of treadle hammer. I like the straight up and down ones though. But some special tooling could be made for this.

it hit even more powerfull when you made a system where 'when you step on the pedal the hammer goes upwards loaded with a springy thing, and when you are on the end of your pedal the hammer shoots down wth some force :-).

Pretty much all of the parts can be found locally. However, if you have trouble, here are links for some of the things you could order online:

Keep the handles a little longer and you get more force.

Would it be more/less effective to reverse the spring position to be up by the head of the hammer and pull down at the back?

Has anyone tried adding an electric motor to one of these?

Why not inverting the coil, so the power is on mass*gravity, not in your legs (I am no expert in these crank mechanical stuff hahaha, just wondering)

Not a good idea to hit two hammer heads together... they're both hardened.. your anvil needs to be of softer material... very cool otherwise
