The World Violation Tour was a 1990 concert tour by English electronic group Depeche Mode in support of the act's seventh studio album, Violator, which was released in March 1990. It was estimated that by the end of the tour, Depeche Mode had toured to 1.2 million fans.

The band rehearsed for the tour in Pensacola, Florida, the same city where the tour kicked off. It was the first time the band has performed live in the state, and the band received some flak from locals who didn't understand their appearance ("I've been called a faggot about twenty times today, mostly from guys leaning out of trucks. This is sort of a backward place, isn't it?" noted Alan Wilder).

The tour kicked off with a North American leg in late May, finishing up in early August in Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium. The North American dates were met with high demand with sellouts in Dallas, Chicago, Orlando, Tampa and Miami; 42,000 tickets for the concert at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey had reportedly been sold within four hours of going on sale, while the Dodger Stadium shows had sold out on the first day of sale. Later in the month, the group played a sole date in Australia, in Sydney, prior to a six-date tour of Japan in September. Following the Japanese dates, the band commenced a European tour, beginning in Brussels in late September. The leg included three dates at the Palais Omnisports Bercy in Paris, where the group performed to approximately 50,000 people. The jaunt lasted two months and concluded with the final show of the tour in Birmingham, UK, in late November.

The projections were made by Anton Corbijn, whose work was projected on large video screens. The tour required approximately 100 stage crew and 11 articulated lorries to transport the stage set.

The performance of the group's cover of "Route 66", which was originally recorded with lead vocals by Martin Gore, was sung live by lead singer Dave Gahan on this tour.

Industrial band Nitzer Ebb opened for the band in North America. Rolling Stone magazine called out the tour as one of the highlights of the 1990 summer music scene, saying "These British synth poppers offer post-industrial melancholy you can dance to. And their misery certainly loves company – on their last tour, they sold out the Rose Bowl.

Depeche Mode in 1990 were:

Alan Wilder
Dave Gahan
Martin Gore
Andrew Fletcher

It's almost criminal that there isn't a professionally shot show of the Violator tour.

Anyone up for some bitter DM memories from a man who just turned 50 some 3 weeks ago, perchance?!

Because I'm a Melbourne lad who had purchased tickets to the Melbourne 'World Violation' show at Festival Hall (they were only playing 2 shows in Australia - Sydney & then Melbourne), I'll NEVER forget arriving there in a cab, only to see a whole heap of people out the front of FH & then heard "Cancelled" over the loudspeakers, while my mate heard "Throat Infection" & we looked at one another in horror as we realised what was - or rather, wasn't - happening, apparently due to Dave suffering from a throat infection...but who really knows what the actual truth was?! I've still not fully forgiven Sydney for that one & the Wikipedia article re: the WVT says that they only played in Sydney re: any Australian shows, without mentioning the Melbourne cancellation - so it makes it appear that they were only ever playing in Sydney in the first place!!

Sure, I attended the SOFAD show (which was held in a much larger & more professional venue, now named Rod Laver Arena & we were in the front row, thanks to my GF's mother's contacts) & I loved it (not too long before Dave suffered a major heroin OD, actually & his 'issues' were so obvious at the show) but as "Violator" has always been my favourite DM album, I've never completely gotten over that one...ah well, c'est la vie, I guess! Cheers & best wishes & happy 2024 to all from 'Down Under'...Matt.

I slept out for tickets for two nights for what became a sold-out-in-20-minutes show. I skipped my high school graduation to go see this show for this same tour in Montreal in June 1990. Easily the best decision and one of the most unforgettable nights of my life. We even managed to meet Martin and Fletch outside of the hotel afterwards and partied with them at a local club. A few weeks later, we drive down to Pittsburgh for the show and managed to do the same thing again. Dave remembered me and called me as “hey, it’s our little friend”. Words just can’t express what this band and their music means to me and how much I love them. While I’m saddened there is no professional grade video of this once-in-a-lifetime epic tour and all I have as souvenirs are a few snapshots with Martin and I and whatever I could buy at the concert venue, this video brings back so many wonderful memories and feelings so thank you for uploading this. You’ve done God’s work by doing the closest thing possible to creating a time machine.

Never understood why DM never released an official recording/film of the World Violation Tour. Martin's genius lyrics, Alan's brilliant music, Dave's energy and voice, plus Anton's visuals made it was such an epic tour! Saw DM for the 1st time ever on this tour, at Giants Stadium in NJ. I was 13 years old and I remember being blown away, dancing, cheering, singing, screaming. One of the best nights of my teens. Thank you for sharing this. Devotee for life! 🌹

This tour is one of those “you had to be there” kind of experiences.

Intro is 30 years old and it still sounds like nowadays techno. Always special.

Always thought it was a shame they never professionally recorded this tour. I love the moodiness of Waiting for the NIght. Alan Wilder is a genius.

My first DM concert in the Woodlands, TX. I was a poor college freshman and could only afford lawn seats, but I still vividly remember the first few notes and beats and jumping and screaming with utter delight. I so wish there was an official tour video. Still jumping and screaming a few days ago at the Memento Mori concert in Austin, TX. They were still amazing to this Devotee.

I can’t be the only one here bawling my eyes out as soon as hearing Martin play /sing “ I Want You Now”’ I love how he made it look so simple but magnificent! Can’t thank enough for you sharing ! This is priceless!

Just a small detail, but I love how you put Alan at the top of the band listing in the description! We all miss that man so much!

Back when Dave sung all three choruses to Enjoy The Silence, as well as the four “Enjoy the silence” lines at the end. Wish he still did that, especially the choruses. I come to hear YOU sing that, Dave, not the crowd!

I can watch this concert over and over again and enjoy every second of it... I believe this was the peak of their brilliance, they are absolutely superb, such a shame I was too young to be there at that time, but if I had a time machine I would absolutely go to this very moment
