Our Story:
We are five years into a seven year effort of transforming 20 acres of "Piney
Grove" in Northwest Florida into our dream homestead/mini farm to be filled
with animals and joy. We plan to have a variety of miniature critters on our
pastures, raise free-range chickens, grow fish in our pond, garden
organically, plant fruit and nut trees, and harvest wild game. Our goal is
to escape the stresses of corporate life and embrace all that country living
has to offer as we enter the next chapter of our lives. Follow along on our
journey!

Tillers are fine for gardens and tiny fields but it would be useless for anything bigger.

Ever looked into no-till methods? I think starting on a fresh field that's never had agriculture the first time till to get a baseline is probably a great start, although year over year you should look into cover crops and no-till it seems to be the way to go

Need to plow then disc then till for best results it makes it easier on your equipment

The rotary tiller side is gonna turn into a hard crust once it rains and actually make it harder for the beans to come through. Not to mention that fine ur susceptible to erosion if there’s any kind of slop and it rains hard

I’m seeing some nay sayers on the tiller. Gotta tell ya, tilled 5 acres for a new hay field, and it did wonders. No drill required, just broadcast and roll it. The sweet corn, made it easy to push plant 12 rows. I assume it would be easier on larger equipment. Best to let it rest for a couple days, almost too soft.

Hi I’m in north Florida as well (live oak) and was wondering what steps do you take to prepare the ground to plant. It’s very sandy in my area and the quality of soil is nonexistent

Put something big like log or something on the back of the harrow with a chain connected to it and drag it behind it will fix the Field better that how my grandpa use to do it

If you can afford the extra fuel and time required then go for it…. The soil is being mixed more but I’m not understanding what is making the soil richer? Richer with what exactly?

We have about three thousand acres and it’s fine for small things like that but it gets to be a big hassle

Wait till you see what a good rain will do. And it's free.

LoL, thats death dirt, not soil suitable for growing up real food.
Butt good luck.

Why not just no-till drill so you don't lose moisture and any organic matter to the overdisturbance? Every tillage pass reduces water absorption and breaks the soil structure to dust. Part of soil health principles are to reduce disturbance, and this is kinda the opposite of that.

Take this from farmer what I am seeing ur soil is really compacted and u need to run a ripper across ur field to break up that compaction instead of a plow and then disk it also soil looks like it has alot of clay in it and u will have issue with heavy clay soil if u have the soil compaction I am seeing in your video

You made out with the disc for 150 years but if you got to spend money that tiller will beat the dirt up finer point is when eat green beans from either you caint tell the difference unless you look in your pocket and that’s one less shed to build to keep stuff in

I have to laugh at all the stupid ignorant lies about rototilling from people who don't know what they're talkin about!
Rototilling has always been the best way to prepare the ground!
Some large-scale commercial Farmers have been rototilling their fields for decades with rototillers up to 10 ft wide or more!

Lots of people have been plowing for thousands of years but they can't except the idea that something else works better!
The modern rototiller was invented in 1912 in Australia by Arthur Clifford Howard and his invention has survived over 100 years and are now made by dozens of companies around the world!
When rototilling is done right you can do in one pass instead of taking several passes with other attachments.

Our family business made a good living with a tractor mounted rototiller doing Fields, firebreaks, orchards, weed abatement, etc.
Customers were always extremely happy with how smooth and pretty it looked afterwords instead of plowing and disking that left it bumpy and messy looking.

The Howard corporation also made the world's best walk behind rototiller that were made up until the 1980s called the Gem costing up around $10, 000 because of the fantastic job they did, how easy they were to operate, and how beautiful they left the ground looking.
Those rototillers were made in several with up to 3 ft wide.
Dowdeswell bought them out and made them for a while. They came with many features never found on any other walk behind rototiller including getting your choice of engine, including diesel. They put every other walk behind tiller in the world to absolute disgrace!

Videos of people running their Howard Gem on YouTube don't know how to run them very well.
You can steer them with one hand even though they weigh over 700 lbs and should leave no tire tracks or footprints. And you can easily do over a whole acre in one day or less.
Absolutely fabulous machines that do a magnificent job!

So clauds are good because they keep the top soil from blowing so much and burning off your crop... lol free lesson
