Actually, in an interview, Domee Shi (the director) says that there were originally four, but another member joined.
But the main reason that it's called 4-town is that Domee Shi found it funny that Ming's daughter would have 4 all over her face, because 4 is a unlucky number in China, as it sounds very close to the word "death" in mandarin.

When you mentioned the name of bands with numbers that doesn't match the group, I can mention one:

Day6 original had 6 members, but one of them left the group, so they kept the name despite being just 5.

It's because of Tae Young. Their they youngest out of the group and I read that they were the last one to join the group. The name of the band was originally 4*Town and it had already gained the group so much popularity that went Tae joined it was too late to change the name. I don't know if this is canon but I love Tae Young so this is canon in my book

It reminds me of 17! Seventeen is a kpop group with 13 members. When they were trainees there used to be 17 boys but 4 of them left. Instead of rebranding they just explained it as 13 members + 3 subgroups (hiphop/vocal/performance) + 1 team which would equal 17!

I always just thought either;
1: They are called 4town, becouse they are for the town
2: They started as 4 members, and then added another

I think it’s because Devon becomes there friend at the end and they each like one of the member, so when Mei’s group has 4 members and then they realize Devon is also a fan and befriend him, he needs a member to like

I heard it was because Robaire eventually wants to leave the band, but I’ve also seen theories that it’s because 4 is an unlucky number in Chinese culture and they wanted to use that as a sort of factor in why Mei’s family doesn’t like the group. The latter makes more sense to me, because in movies all the subtle details count and Pixar is very good at that. I mean they even have recurring easter eggs like a-113
