It is incredible to me that what is essentially an innocent Bulgarian folk song can sound like the hardest shit ever to an English native listener

As a Bulgarian, it's truly unbelievable to me that people like our folk music. I grew up thinking it was too old fashioned and boring, because that's what kids my age were saying. So thank you for reminding me of the beauty of it

Probably because I'm from the Balkans, I feel this on a whole different level. Bulgaria has many mountains, same like Bosnia (where I'm from) and these choirs wouldn't have been what they are if it weren't for the mountain ranges that allowed for highlander culture to develop over the centuries. Which is why you'll discover so many old songs tell tales of mountains and highlanders in this fashion.

Bulgarian choirs are one of the highest peaks of music in human history and I'm so grateful that KEXP recorded this and shared with everyone.

Who would've thought that a Bulgarian folk song about an old man who just wanted to have a good time would be an absolute banger. 👏😊

Went to see them in Liverpool in the early nineties. Front row, right in the middle, in a beautiful Cathedral with perfect acoustics, a couple of yards behind the conductor. I could barely breath during the concert. I could hardly talk in the interval. In a lifetime of playing music professionally, nothing has ever affected me as much. It still does the same today. Damned onions!

I can't express this properly. This song is different than anything I have heard before. It is totally different from the music I am used to and the choral style I use, yet I absolutely love it. So unique, so wonderful.

The song is about this bachelor gradpa who cheekily put his 'kalpak' (an old timey hairy hat) to the side and went to the village. In the village the young ladies were dancing a 'horo' (a traditional Bulgarian dance) and he went to dance as well. Most of the ladies scattered, except for the youngest one Angelina, who stayed. :)

I'm from India and the "dum dum" alliteration is very typical of Indian classical music ("bol" in northern India, "konnakol" in the south, even western musicians like John Mc Laughlin are famous for their konnakol skills). I suspect this tradition could have reached Bulgaria and the rest of the Balkans through the migrations of the Romani people. Listening to this made me feel that we are all one common, collective, "world" culture. My best wishes to these lovely singers and to the people of Bulgaria!

I love this song and this recording. Is is a whimsy story about an old man- grandpa- deda, who is also a bachelor- ergen, who got tipsy or drunk, that's why he's red- cherven- and his hat is tilted on his head. He went to the village and got on the dance- horo- with the young unmarried ladies- momite. He was tipsy and red and his hat did not stand well on his head, so when the ladies saw him, all ran away and only the youngest one- named Angelina- the name comes from Angel- was the only one left. I love the harmony, the whimsy, the looks on the faces of the singers- happy and content. Amazing and talanted and beautiful singers. Thank you! ❤

J’avais 17 ans lorsque j’ai entendu ce groupe musical pour la première fois. À l’époque, le mur de Berlin était tombé et ce groupe représentait un symbole de liberté nouvelles.

I was fortunate enough to be in the 2019 Colorado Middle School All State Choir, and this was one of the songs we sang. It really made me appreciate Bulgarian choirs and was definitely the most fun song, in my opinion. It's an incredible piece and this is an incredible performance!
