“War is always a defeat”: Pope calls for ceasefire amid Israel-Gaza, Russia-Ukraine offensives

During his weekly blessing in the Vatican’s St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis called for ceasefires between Israel and Hamas, as well as Russia and Ukraine, as military offences between the regions continue.

"Let no one abandon the possibility of stopping the weapons," the Pope said, adding, “War is always a defeat.”

The global Catholic Church head also called for Palestinian Hamas militants, operating out of Gaza, to release the many hostages they have held captive since their unprecedented attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

In response to the horrific attacks, Israel has bombarded Gaza continuously with ground attacks and airstrikes, killing thousands of innocent people — with a potential invasion of the region looming.

No, Holy Father. War is not always a defeat. ST. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas remind us that there is such thing as a Just War. The Israeli was on Hamas meets that definition squarely. Failure to pursue a Just War when it is necessary is a betrayal of Justice, and would constitute a genuine defeat.
