"Goodnight, my kitten." The last words of the American short story writer Ernest Hemingway were made to his wife the night before he took his own life. Hemingway had a lot of medical problems including rapid onset of vascular dementia. The electroshock therapy was destroying his memory. He was in pain from multiple head trauma injuries due to two plane crashes. In other words, his mind was going and he knew it. I suspect he decided he didn't want to end up a drivvelling vegetable.
