For calathea parents 🤩

Where are my calathea parents at 🥰? If your calatheas are thriving, share your tips with the community I’m sure there’s at least a fellow calathea parent that will find your experience helpful 💜

Calathea care can be confusing sometimes. Many of you have asked for tips on #calathea care and I’m happy to share what I’ve learned with mine 💜:

🌞light: it is recommended we provide some kind of filtered light. In my experience, the calathea is happy in a spot from where she can see the sky in her peripheral view, but is not hit directly by the sun for long periods of time. You can use a sheer curtain or some kind of barrier to filter direct light.

💧water: calatheas are very sensitive to the salts and minerals found in tap water. Here in #Berlin tap water tends to be really harsh on my plants, and especially on my calatheas. Make sure that you water yours with either filtered, distilled or rain water. I use a filtering water can and it has worked really well for me! Comment below if you’d like me to share with you the one I use for mine 😊

🟤 soil: a well draining soil is great for calatheas, as we want to keep it moist (and not super wet) all the time. If you are an underwaterer, a plastic pot will help in maintaining the soil moist for a bit longer. Always check the soil with your finger before watering. I usually check once a week (and sometimes twice a week - depending on the season, how she is growing and other environmental factors). Once I feel the soil partially drying, I water 😉💧 When you water, make sure to water all the way through and that excess water drains down.

☁️ humidity: calatheas love high humidity. Try to keep it at about 50-60%. Avoid placing your calathea close to AC or heating vents, as the air can be very dry there. If possible, try investing in a humidifier (these are super helpful in maintaining humidity levels constant and ideal).

My calatheas live in restroom. Where they receive and humidity from when we shower and I also have a window where they get bright indirect light. Type rattlesnake and setosa.

I have one (1) friend whose calatheas look impeccable... Their secret? Sacrificing your entire house to mold for 80% humidity
