The "giant impact hypothesis" suggests that Earth collided with a Mars-sized protoplanet named Theia about 4.5 billion years ago, and the resulting debris formed the Moon. 

Here's a more detailed explanation:

Theia:

The giant-impact hypothesis proposes that a Mars-sized protoplanet, named Theia, collided with the early Earth. 

Collision:

This collision was so violent that it flung massive amounts of debris into space. 

Moon Formation:

The debris from both the Earth and Theia coalesced to form the Moon. 

Evidence:

NASA Science and Wikipedia cite evidence supporting this hypothesis, including the Moon's composition and the fact that the Earth's mantle contains remnants of Theia. 

Remnants of Theia:

Some scientists believe that two large blobs deep within Earth's mantle are remnants of Theia. 

Debate:

There is ongoing debate about whether the collision was a head-on impact or a glancing blow, and whether Theia's material is still present in Earth's mantle.
