Why Are We Sacrificing Californians for Smelt?

Elon Musk:
I mean, you take sort of the California wildfires, for example.
There's like this fish called the smelt, for example.
So we have far more freshwater runoff into the ocean than, we should really
on the theory that it helps this one little fish that likes a slightly briny freshwater saltwater mix.
If we keep more freshwater than this smelt fish well will not be happy. But there's no actual evidence that the the smelt fish is going to be, unhappy if we keep a bit more freshwater
In fact, we should keep more freshwater, keep the reservoirs full, and just have some sensible firebreaks and move the brush away from houses.
But due to a bunch of environmental rulings, you can't actually do that in California.
They're not allowed to do the breaks and then are allowed to push the brush back away from houses.
That's just an example of, like, we would have saved
a lot of tragedy in LA. If we've done that.

It's insanity that we're sacrificing our water reserves for the Delta Smelt while people's homes burn down.

LA mayor needs to resign... She cut 17.1 million dollars from the water and firefighter budget AND took a vacation when this fire began.

In the fires in Hawaii, there was no water in the fire hydrants, once again you have basically the same situation, you have the most advanced country in the world unable to contain a fire.
Something smells rotten.

Unbelievable stupidity and yet the same people will vote the same way after watching their house burn

You used to be fined if you didn’t clear your property of weeds and debris. I was born in California and cleared the land with my father so we didn’t get fined. The fine was an incentive to protect property against fires.

They say it's to protect smelt but it's a wicked plan to "build back better" once it's destroyed.

I've always been shocked by the fact that they allow all of that freshwater to run into the ocean when there are states that need it... Nevada would never be low on water if they were to redirect it via a pipeline. We can run pipelines all over the country for oil but not for fresh water? Insane.

Maybe FEMA can give the smelt fish 750.00😂

Newsom is a real jerk I heard that property values are sky high so older people that have lived there probably can’t afford to rebuild so the state takes the property and makes a lot of money off someone’s misery That is Newsom👎🏼🤔

It's a non-native minnow that was used by fisherman to catch striped bass in the canals and were released by the fishermen at the end of the day where it gradually established itself. It's criminal to protect this insignificant fish by denying water to farmers and water reserves.

Would it not be possible to let a little amount of fresh water reserve to escape into the ocean to allow for the "poor smelt fish" to go there, but keep the bulk of the water for the people?
On the other hand, if you want the "Great reset" to be successful, you must give the top priority to the smelt fish no matter what.

in the Philippines and south east Asia they eat the smelt, how crazy to worry about one little fish. Now those California wild fires produced more CO2 in a day than all the cars in a year.

What the hell are you talking about?! We have Smelt that have been introduced into the Great Lakes from the ocean, and they are doing just fine. They adapt to fresh and salt water just fine.

Save the fish and lose human lives and expensive homes. Sick.
