Why Your Golf Swing Needs THIS Unexpected Key Move

In this lesson I wanted to share a simple solution to a problem that i have been seeing quite a bit recently with the students I have been working with.

Many of these had steep swings, over the top moves are were cutting across the golf ball at impact, they all had 1 common mistake in transition. Over the years many golfers have been told that the 'arms' are bad when it comes to the golf swing and you should focus more on the body and the bigger muscles...... it was that exact concept that was hurting these golfers.

In this lesson I show you exactly what the arms should be doing and give you a really simple and easy way of training this into your swing. The students that I showed this to all saw instant results with better downswings and better shots, if it helped them I know it can help you too

As always i'm keen to hear your thoughts so drop down below and let me know if you have any thoughts or questions

The bag drill explains the nature of the swing better than any I have found. Ever. Thank you.

Watched this yesterday, worked on it for 45 minutes this morning followed by a round. Had to come back and leave feedback, made a HUGE difference to the quality of strike and flight direction. 👏👏👏

I watched this video several weeks ago several times in the evening, watched it again the next morning before leaving for the golf course. And yes I had a very good day off the tee and in the fairways, I now watch it several time a week to reinforce into my mid 70's year old mind what I need to do, It's been a very good last two weeks on the course. Thank you.

You're one of the best instructors on YT. Concepts become very clear after your explanation. I've improved my game by following a lot of your tips.

Chris, I am so grateful for your instructional videos. They are so helpful and insightful. As a physician and older golfer, I see some of the instruction by others online that seem more likely to cause injuries to us mere mortals. Your drills to get hand/arm speed early in the downswing are fantastic. All of your videos are amazingly helpful, easy to understand and follow. I just wish you were closer, so I could take lessons with you in person. Thank you for all your hard work and inspiration!!!

Hi Chris, Thanks much for your video on SHALLOWING THE CLUB. I have been battling bad shots the last couple of years going from a 4 to an 8 index while trying to change my swing. My problem has been EARLY EXTENSION, but you brought to light the issue about shallowing the club with hands and right arm INDEPENDENTLY of the body from the top - this was the key for me. Also, the issue of forward bend at the transition causing the club to tip over early truly helped. I have had a couple of very encouraging practice sessions (good compression/high trajectory/slight draws) while realizing the more forward bend I achieved during the transition the more I needed to shallow out the shaft to compensate (I was using my body to shallow out the club). I'm 67 years old and was a scratch in my youth. I was fortunate to have a great teacher - a very old professional that learned to teach from the great Tommy Armour. This move from the top was very reminiscent of what he told me over 50 years ago, only he described it as trying to hit the side of my right foot with the club head - a very extreme move with extremely positive results. Another thought was to try and hit the ball with the BACK of the clubhead - pretty wild, huh? Hoping to have a video lesson with you in the near future. All the best, Ned

I've been watching some of the Martin Ayers, John Hensby, Steve Elkington YouTube content over the last few days. It isn't the easiest to follow, but I've been trying very hard ! One of the things they talk about is dumping the club, which I assumed to be as stated. However, the explanation of exactly what to do wasn't clear.
Then suddenly this video popped up, and I have to say a big thank you to Chris for his perfectly clear explanation and demonstration of what I believe I've been trying to decipher. This is just so helpful - clear visual and verbal advice.

I'm 70 and have played 60 years and this is the best tip I've ever heard. I was about to give up golf because I lost so much distance. After this my 9 iron is back to 150 yards 5 iron 200 and 3 wood at minimum 240 (length of the driving range). Can't thank you enough!!!

Chris thank you for putting correct golf information on YouTube. Among all the nonsense i see on YouTube you and a few others are the only channels posting quality golf content. Much appreciated. I now understand why tiger woods said "stay off YouTube when looking for golf swing tips"

Well Done Chris on the Key Arm movement on the Golf Swing! This has been the move I have been working on for a few months now. When I connect with it, the shots are pure and long. On the other hand. . . . . . . .! I know it's a Work In Progress, so I am not disappointed with negative feed back. I am archiving this video for referral purposes! Keep up the Good Work Chris!

Thank you Chris. It feels so natural and dynamic and less trying to control everything.

Great video. That’s why it’s called “down swing” not out swing. As most amateur golfers have so much swing through. I know my self on the downswing I think about rotation and start the downswing with lower body and hip first. End up with the issue u have on this video, ball go out to the right.

Ive been watching monte scheinblum for a while and he talks about this alot. Research (apparently- i havent delved into it) says the hips lead the arms by 0.3 seconds and the earlier people try to use their arms, the better the relationship between hips and arms is.
Us hackers often think we're using our arms too much and end up spinning out even more 🤦‍♂️ ive had great success with this type of drill and can hit effortless rockets. As usual, i end up straying and losing it for a bit. When i come back to this type of drill it always helps! Got a round booked tomorrow and this has just reminded me that this will be my only swing thought tomorrow 👍

what a perfectly timed video. I had these "feels' whilst working on my swing last night.

Chris, I had to come back on here regarding this video, having tried it out today.
Wow! I realised that all along my "feel" has been to swing the club - collect the ball - and try to follow through as an afterthought.
It only clicked today once I fully realised that my main instinct has to be that it's the TURN that helps you strike the ball, not the arm swing. It's changed my whole thinking - still not perfect but I feel like I'm now on the right path.
I've been told previously to try and "rake the wall behind" in order to get the right plane but that just felt weird.
I really feel I've turned a corner..! Cheers

Didn't even have to finish watching and knew right from the start that this is one of the main problems why we don't get our club and hands at the front leg at impact along with coming over the top even if it's only slightly. This morning I finally saw why I couldn't get to that position by dissecting Tigers younger self. I saw his arms move 1st, while I was moving my hips and shoulder along with the arms as 1 piece. Took me a while to get my arms to function independently for the 1st move, but eventually got it. Now that I see this drill it should be much easier to program myself for that move 1st. Nice

I've been working on this move, fixes so many issues. Just trying to work on hand speed and deceleration. Trying to get that "speedboat and skier" feel!
