Mirror | Restoration Trailer

Andrei Tarkovsky’s fourth feature is perhaps the great director’s most personal and evocative work. It traverses three generations of a poet’s family in 20th-century Russia; his relationships with his wife, mother, and children and the society around him coalesce through events connected only by the interior logic of the poetic subconscious, yielding associations that both mystify and enthrall. Unified by Georgi Rerberg’s delicate lensing, Mirror employs radical shifts in both texture and color, abstracting the elemental minutiae of everyday life (like waves of air spreading across a field, or spilled milk pooling on a table) to conjure the nostalgic sensations of memory and an enigmatic feeling of being outside space and time. A Janus Films release.

It took three separate viewings at three very different periods of my life, my 20's then 40's and now finally mid 60's to totally and completely understand The Mirror. I've seen all Tarkovsky's films, many multiple times, but its this masterpiece and the equally complex Stalker that touched me in a way that the medium of cinema should, but almost never does. Stunning film making.

I don't know of any other film that is more dream like in nature than Tarkovsky's The Mirror. Watching it genuinely feels like a dream.

Considering the fact that Criterion has previously released most of Tarkovsky’s Soviet films, as well as last year’s release of Come and See, it is genuinely shocking that Criterion has not released this masterpiece on Blu-ray. If any film deserves the Criterion treatment, it’s this one!

The ONLY trailer that captures the mood of this masterpiece properly. Does anyone else remember the nuke scene?

Nolan mentioned this movie as one of the inspiration for Oppenheimer.

Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema had introduced me to Mirror prior to making Interstellar. Other than the fact that it’s a great masterpiece, we found it very useful for looking at the use of elements and the use of textures. Mirror is an incredibly rich visual tapestry, but also one in which elements are allowed to breathe in symbolic ways.”

It I would dare to say that only one film in history has real soul, this is it. You can feel it, but can't explain it.

Mirror is a compilation of beautiful scenes that held great meaning for Tarkovsky. I got more out of Solaris and Andrei Rublev, but friends whose opinions I respect prefer Mirror because it is a naked personal statement by a great director.

Afs in Austin is playing this in July. I'll be there for sure. I've seen Andrei Rublev, Solaris, and Stalker there already. If you get the chance, it's worth it to see Tarkovsky on the big screen.

People say @1:00 is a great shot. But the shot at @0:15 is something I might remember as the last thought when I die. There is something special in that scene I cant explain, or forget, when the movie name Mirror is uttered

I SEE the Witch and the ring took many influences from Tarkovsky

Some films are meant to be seen and felt not understood or explained. Mirror is the epitome of subjectivity.

This trailer is confusing but hauntingly beautiful, just like the movie…though apparently, from what I heard, Soviet censors were just as weirded out and confused by this movie as everyone else was.
