I’m going to walk you through what this thing is like to live with and how it behaves on the road before handing over the keys to Paolo to test the offroad credentials at Road America. So let’s dive into that last thing I just mentioned

Yes, it’s genuinely quick - no, it’s not as fast as the TRX and no it doesn’t sounds as good

But that TRX has only been out for the last 2 years and before that thing came out, no one was complaining about the Raptor’s power

And it’s not just the power - the biggest and really only complaint people had about the gen 2 was the lack of exhaust sound, but Ford has fixed that here

They added a trombone loop in the exhaust runners to make them equal length so the tone is improved, but not only that you’re assaulted with spool noise in the cabin..there’s just so much theater here!

Yes, it’s the same 3.5TTv6 under the hood as last gen and it makes the same 450 hp and 510 lbft and it still goes through the same 10-speed transmission, but all those things have been revisited and optimised for this third gen. The gearbox is quicker and more aggressive, the throttle response is sharper, and you have nearly as much customizeability as you would in a sportscar

Of course you have Fox dampers on all 4 corners, but they’re newer, bigger, and stronger. In fact pretty much everything from the shocks to the knuckles have been beefed up for this third gen.

This Raptor no longer has leaf spring suspension in the back, they moved to a multi-link, spring and damper setup in the rear, and if you don’t understand why that’s a big deal let me walk you through it

A multilink suspension in the rear of the truck adds for more sophistication, more ways in which the suspension can compress and rebound to soak up bumps or impacts. You get greater rear articulation, but you also get a more sophisticated and more luxurious ride

And a more luxurious ride is exactly right. This is a body-on-frame, heavy, off-road truck with 35 inch BFG K02s, but somehow on the street here it manages to feel and ride like a Mercedes!

It gets a claimed 16 mpg combined
Payload maxes out at 1400 lbs
And towing maxes out as 8200 lbs

Steel front bumper, recovery hooks, lights, bash plates underneath
35 inch tires (there are the standard size)
Running boards, dont hang down (Frontier)
12 inch clearance (13.1 with 37 in tires)
Only comes in supercab configuration
5.5 foot bed
Power liftgate is the first i’ve seen going up
Tie downs, no rails, but zone lighting again
And then my favorite thing - pro power 2kW generator

There’s only one word to describe this. Huge.
Talk overall design (familiar, square, and rugged feeling)
Talk materials (suede, denim, textures, plastic knobs, metal paddles)
Talk comforts (heated wheel, heated & cooled seats, no massage)
Blind spot monitor on the a-pillar not your mirror (very Audi)
Memory seat (3)
The orange American flag that you see every time you open the door
Buttons for your mirror lights and bed lights
Massive full digital cluster (great graphics, quick, great resolution, totally custom)
HUGE steering wheel (noon marker, magnesium paddles)
Driver assist suite on the left
Custom drivetrain stuff on the right
Pedals will move to you
Trailering controls (steering assist, brake gain, cameras)
4x4 controls (2H, 4H, 4LO, 4A)
Locking rear diff
Drive mode selector (how many modes, what are they)
Above infotainment randow buttons for traction control, camera, trail control
Right of infotainment you have a 12 volt and and 120V
Under infotainment you have physical buttons for everything
Underneath that you have a slider with wireless charging, outlets, etc
Beneath that folding gear selector, clever phone slot, cup holders (too small)
Deep center bin with the fold out tray thing (nice)
Bang & olufson sound is great
Now tackle infotainment:
Insanely big screen
Sync 4, over the air updates
Wireless ACP & AA
Zone lighting
Pro power onboard (2Kw)
Cameras are amazing
No sunroof, no HUD
Rear seats are huge
They fold up to get out of the way
There’s a box system there
There’s also the batteries for the pro power system
Heated rear seats
USB-A, USB-C, and 120v outlet
Power rear window

Approach: 31
Departure: 23.9
Breakover: 22.7
Ground Clearance: 12 inchs and with the 37s its 13.1in!
Front suspension travel 14.0-inch (standard), 13.0-inch (w/optional 37-inch tires)
Rear suspension travel 15.0-inch (standard), 14.1-inch (w/optional 37-inch tires)

Cool trick: you can lift up the tailgate just a little bit and the motor will kick in and close the rest of the way for you. This thing is full on a luxury sports car trophy truck. Best vehicle ever made, period.

Center caps remind me .. as kids.. we had to get out to lock front hubs before going through the rough stuff. ..back in 80s.

My Gen 3 does have trail turn assist. Its just not the easiest to find. I believe its in features.

As a 3rd gen owner I finally broke mine in after 1000 miles and damn this thing is a beast in sport mode!!!

You need to put this truck on a lift to appreciate the Baja inspired suspension and chassis. It’s on a different level than any other 1/2 ton pickup truck currently on the market.

The gen 2 is a little bumpy in the rear end so that’s a big rear upgrade 👍

Dodge has been trying to catch the Raptor for years with their “Raptor Killer” business and now the TRX. They’re not even close. Chevy can’t even try.

It’s a nice truck but, farm trucks are put through far tougher tests on a daily basis. I’m sure if you had better weather and a tougher track it would have still been a good review. Nice truck, good video guy.

When you're using the maps even on android auto, the map steps show up in the dash to tell you when and how far to turn. So you get the steps of your drive in the dash but no map. Agree that would be nice.

I have the 21 and antimatter blue and supposedly a 36 gallon tank 8 miles from empty never got more than 32 gallons in it. No step in the tailgate seems to be accompanying the gas tank or connected to the absence of moonroof. I heard they’ve remove the front torsion bar in later models is this true? Also trail turn assist not sure I have that on the 21 model. How does one know? Thought it was weird that the tremor gets that feature in the raptor does not

Ford needs sequential turbos to boost HP to 550 and TQE to 650 ft-lbs!

If you're driving this in rutted dirt and snow/ice, ruts created by normal width vehicles, won't this always be slipping and sliding side to side because it is too wide for those ruts? That's my concern. Something as simple as driving on a turnpike during a heavy snowstorm, the width making it impossible for me to stay in the tracks, and as anyone knows who drives in those conditions, when you cross from one lane to another out of the tracks you know it, you slip and slide a bit till you get situated in the tracks of the next lane over. Thoughts on this concern?

Maybe you should have used the mud and ruts mode, since you were driving in muddy rutted terrain. 🙄

Wait…. I though the raptor didn’t have lane keep assist.
