Orca mothers make 'lifelong sacrifice' for sons - BBC News

A study of orcas in the North Pacific has revealed that mothers make a "lifelong sacrifice" for their sons.

Rearing a son significantly reduced a female killer whale's chance of reproducing in the future.

The energy they need to feed sons appears to compromise their health, leaving them less able to reproduce and raise other young.

Humans: men who are raised by their mothers are weak
Orcas: hold my beer

For more context:

"Male orcas are massive, and so are their appetites. They're also less maneuverable, which may make it harder for them to catch prey."

The payoff for the mother is that his she would become a grandmother multiple times over. Her genes would end up in a bunch of calves. And because they'll be born into other pods, she wouldn't have to spend any effort raising them.

As the mum of a 15 year old boy who is 6 foot 5 tall and is able to lift mum off the ground with 1 arm, and can clear the fridge very quickly in a cost of living crisis but likes mum to do all the chores for
I FEEL YOU, ORCA MUMS💕🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🐋🙂

Orcas message to humans: Your kids don't owe you anything BUT you owe your kids something since it was YOUR CHOICE to bring them into this world.

Oh that's so adorable, these animals don't take their kids for granted, humans should learn from their example

Finally a study that tells us something valuable!

Animals are beautiful, intelligent, sentient and loving. To think otherwise is incredibly ignorant.

I think it is worth mentioning that orcas are unlikely to kick out adult males from pod, unlike elephant, gorillla, lions, even dolphins who kick out males from the pack when they mature.

So basically some of those sounds the orca boys make could be translated to "MA!!! ARE MY PIZZA ROLLS DONE YET!!!'

Raising sons is an exhausting experience and burdensome to the Mother ? That's not the way I heard it . These amazing creatures have evolved this way because their survival in the natural world demanded it. Thank the lord the BBC can't interfere here with their left wing, patriarchal society nonsense.
Long live the Orca I say.

Wow, humans should really learn how to be parents from this Orca animals, they are lovely! Quality is more important than Quantity!

The behavior is reinforced by Darwinian fitness. If a female orca raises a female calf to adulthood, she passes her genes to a few young who will in turn repeat that. If she raises a big son, he will spread her genes a lot more. Her descendants that also do this will multiply more etc.

🚩🚨🚩I've no idea when this clip was originally created. If recent, it's the 1st time I've heard BBC give ABSOLUTELY opposite opinions or facts on such an animal with such ongoing scientific studies. ORCA's a maternal lead Pods that are all related, unless on EXTREMELY rare occasions they adopt a lone individual. Both genders stay with their mom FOR LIFE. MALES mate with outside pods in their region as they gather in large groups for brief reunions of other known pods. Males do NOT mate with their sisters in the pod, nor do they hang out with their own offspring in a pod bc they are with their mothers.

It's not just orca mums. My son's are 35 and 32 respectively and still at home. As long as they're happy with their choices then so am I 😃
