Well plotting it on a graph may be one thing you need to do, but y may also be a value you simply need to find. It could represent just about anything. It could be a speed, pressure, force, time, profit, etc. Anything that might be represented by a function.

Euler invented this. It's good to learn, too, as this notation is *very* common through much of math, physics, and engineering. Just think of the f( ) notation as a whole, not as multiplication. And it makes good sense, too. Saying f(3) instead of f(x) makes it clear that we are plugging in the value 3 for x. In most cases it's okay to simply use y if you prefer, but understand the f(x) notation also.
