I didn’t know any of this! You are correct in that my perception of the banjo was “white hillbilly”, which has its own weird connotations knowing the actual origin now. Seems I have more research and introspection to do.

Any idea where Darius Rucker fits into this legacy?

"Country" music actually evolved from "English and Scottish Ballads. or Childe ballads, that came with the settlers who stayed in the Applachian hills. The lost love, and murder ballads were passed in oral tradition among the isolated hills. The Carter Family, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton grew up with their grandparents' songs.
From the early 1900s, John Lomax drove thousands of miles a year collecting fragments and verses on wax cylinders and writing the words down.
He also collected work songs and spirituals from black prisons throughout the South.
The songs branched into Folk music and Country music, and Country/Western music from songs collected from cowboys, and bronc busters out west.
