For all of you guys who carry grizzly bear spray -- don't let the first time you use it be the first time that you HAVE to use it. It's like any weapon -- you need to know its capabilities AND its limitations. Try firing a one second burst on a windless day so you can see how it deploys. You are not going to empty it. Mine claimed a range of 30 feet. In testing it only went about 15 feet, but it also put out a large, thick cloud. Now I know what to expect, and I now know not to waste spray which won't reach my target when the doin' time comes. It's no different than a handgun -- practice disengaging the safety and putting your finger on the trigger in one motion. Repeatedly. Develop the muscle memory such that if the critical moment comes, you can draw, go hot, and fire without even having to look or think about it because it's so automatic. A weapon is only as good as its operator. You don't want to be fumbling through your backpack trying to remember how to take the safety off and which side the business end of your spray canister is on when you're in the gravest extreme. Those precious split seconds you save can save your life -- and once they pass you can't get them back.
