In this video we are going to learn about the basics of delay.
Delay is one of the most used effects in the world of live audio. It is often used with guitars and vocals.
Delay is used to record a portion of audio, then repeat it a short time after the original sound is made. This creates an echo of the original sound.
Just like reverb, there are many different delay effects that can be used. They range from guitar pedals, plug-ins, on board's, etc. Let’s take a look at the common parameters of delay and how to use them.
Like in most effects, there is a dry and wet control. If this parameter is set all the way to "dry", only the original signal will be heard. If it is set all the way to "wet" only the delay signal will come through. This control is also sometimes named "mix".
Another parameter on every delay is the Feedback control. Feedback controls how many repeats are made after the original sound. The repeats will get progressively quieter until it fades away completely.
There are a couple ways to set the tempo on a delay unit. One common way to set this parameter on many console delays and many guitar pedal delays is "tap tempo". Tap tempo is a button that can be pushed in time with the song to set the tempo of the delay. Most delays also have a way to set the delay time manually by setting the Beats per minute or BPM to an exact value.
Most delays also come with the ability for you to change the delay time of the repeats, such as 8th note, 16th note, triplets, etc. this will give your repeats different rhythms adding more creativity and complexity to the mix.
Delay is a versatile effect that can add texture to a mix in many different ways.
