Whenever a load is placed on the ground, the ground must have the capacity to support it without excessive settlement or failure. Understanding load bearing capacity is vital to avoiding excessive settlement or failure.

In this video, Andrew discusses the bearing capacity of soil and why ground bearing pressure is important.

WOW WOW WOW!!! is all I can say, I took this class in grad school and failed because the teacher was a real pain. I just watched 8 minutes of this explanation and I understand something that I couldn't get in a whole semester. Just because you know the materials doesn't mean you can teach.

Thank you Andrew. Working Crane AP daily planning crane lifts, and looking at soil stability, mat size, ect. I have a much better insight into what the soil engineers are calculating at watching your videos. Best barrista on site!

Hi Andrew, great series and thanx fur sharing your knowledge.

Can you do a similar short video on consolidated and over consolidated soils too please

Geotechnical engineering is a discipline within civil engineering that focuses on the behavior of natural geological materials in engineered systems.

Many thanks Sir for your incredible video!!! I have a question about clay soil if its allowed to build a big buildings on it given its capacity to carry loads. However, it can carry small houses if consolidation took place prior to build the house. Correct me if I am wrong, please.

At least how many tests do you use to determine the capacity of a soil?

What program do you use to determine the capacity of the soil and settlement, especially when you have several strata of soil?

please continue to calculate one case of bearing capacity and how to use them in the design of footings. thnks

needs more Ah and um. should have done some more test on a clay. dry or wet test.

I have a questions about roof top garden beds and how to measure the pressure of the soil on the building?

the results of the boring test conducted for the proposed residential building of about 6-storey, from the natural ground up to 1 meter depth is 100 KPA, from the ground to 2 meter depth is 125 KPA, from the ground up to 3 meters depth is 130 KPA, from the groundv to 4 meters is 72 KPA, from the the gound to 5 meters depth is 40 KPA, ans from the ground up to 6 meters depth is 110 KPA, and son 120KPA. Now the question is at what depth from the ground the column foundation be situated?

What if the compaction looks wavy but the compaction passed and also optimum moisture achieved. What would be the cause of wavy compaction?

Something's wrong with the acoustics/audio. Maybe the lapel mic could be pinned up higher on his shirt.

(But thanks for making!)

We have to explain to soil that don't make compression for shear
