William the Conqueror came over from France with the De Vaux family, a family with a line who later changed their name to de Strickland, the Nevilles were blood related to William who were married into the de Strikeland(Stricklands) at that time. They later inherited Sizergh Castle from Deincourts among other estates.
The Conqueror can be traced all the way back to the Viking Sea Kings ie Rollo, Kari and Förnjot

William is called the conqueror for they who refused to go to England and was lured there went to England with such a small force that was defeated though accidentally won with such small numbers after recovering, basically they were fighting a losing battle and accidentally won at a heavy cost which made them so desperate to prevent further wars that they started the Harring of the north to maintain the peace they fought to preserve.
