Because Danny Lloyd was so young, and since it was his first acting job, Stanley Kubrick was highly protective of the child. During the shooting of the movie, Lloyd was under the impression that the film he was making was a drama, not a horror movie. In fact, when Wendy carries Danny away while shouting at Jack in the Colorado Lounge, she is actually carrying a life-size dummy, so Lloyd would not have to be in the scene. He only realized the truth several years later, when he was shown a heavily edited version of the film. He did not see the uncut version of the film until he was seventeen, eleven years after he had made it.

What makes this movie so scary is the fact that it's from the perspective of someone having a psychological nightmare. The thought of someone from our own family having the capacity to kill us is something we all should fear. That's what makes this horror movie so unique.

Nicholson should have received an Oscar from his performance. He was maniacally wonderful !

Its incredible to me that this is genuinely one of the best horror movies ever made and yet it barely scratches the surface of the also excellent novel.

This is the greatest horror movie of all time. Obviously Psycho has my respect, and its legacy; but THIS is the greatest horror movies of all time. Hands down.

I recently finished reading the novel today for the first time and despite the movie deviating from the book significantly, it does capture the eeriness of it. The acting of course certainly mind-blowing and spine-tingling.

The Shining is one of the greatest and scariest psychological horror movies of all time. The story, performance's, music, images, astomphere, tension, and cinematography was so suspenseful, frightening, haunting, mysterious, thrilling, intense, eerie, creepy, and spooky 😰😱 which works perfectly for the movie. It was such a nail-biting and intense thrill ride as it will keep you on the edge of your seat.😰😱 It also gives a insightful and articulate representation of isolation and paranoia as you descend into madness. Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duvall did a phenomenal and spectacular job portraying Jack and Wendy Torrance as they both put tons of emotion and depth into their roles. To this day the ending still gives me chills and goosebumps 😰😱 and I still watch it and I consider it a classic. It never gets old.😍😎💯👍

People often ask me why I believe The Shining is the best horror movie of all time. They always want me to cite a specific scene or moment. Unfortunately, theres no way to explain it without watching it from beginning to end. It builds a feeling throughout. What a masterpiece!

Still one of the best psycho-thriller films ever made.

The movie was released in 1980 and this trailer was uploaded 32 years later on YouTube. And this upload was eleven years ago. It's unreal how time flies and people fades but the memories of the people long gone are stored here in this electronic server which will continue to exist after I myself am long gone someday. I post this comment as a piece of my memory.

40 years later Indian cinema is still trying to match this level of intensity

One of the best film trailers ever. Apparently the MPAA rejected it at first, on account of the elevator scene, saying they don't allow blood to be shown in any trailers that would be seen by all ages. Kubrick persuaded them that the blood was rusty water and got the trailer passed.

Edit: This isn't the original trailer. Ah well. I'll leave it here incase anyone's interested.

Definitely not the original trailer. Gives too much of the plot away too quickly and is littered with tropes from contemporary movie trailers - like that final jolt at the end. Feels just like all the trailers of today.
