China Slams ICC Over Duterte Arrest Warrant, Warns Against ‘Double Standards’
China’s foreign ministry announced that it was closely monitoring the situation after the Philippines arrested its former president, Rodrigo Duterte. The arrest, which came on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court, marks a significant development in the ongoing ICC investigation into alleged crimes against humanity. During a regular press briefing, Chinese spokesperson Mao Ning addressed the situation, responding to questions about Duterte’s arrest. Duterte, a former mayor and prosecutor who served as president of the Philippines from 2016 to 2022, was taken into custody early on Tuesday. This marks the biggest step yet in the ICC’s investigation into Duterte’s controversial anti-drug crackdown, which led to thousands of deaths and widespread international condemnation. After his arrest, Duterte was sent to The Hague, where he is expected to arrive on the morning of March 12. At 79 years old, Duterte could become the first Asian former head of state to stand trial at the International Criminal Court
