You have some superb reasons to record yourself in your video and many of these are why I began recording myself. It is great to look back when you are struggling and I find it to be a great motivator to encourage me to keep practicing and trying to get better.

What do you use to clean your guitars, that Ibanez is always looking like you just bought it. 👌

I 100% agree with this and am starting to preach it to people. I had been playing aimlessly (by myself and in bands) for about 10 years now. I started recording myself each week during lockdown and the progress I have made is insane (at least for me). I'm finally learning again and picking up on weaknesses in my playing. Plus I am getting so much more out of having goals.

Funny that I was recording myself when the notification for this video popped up! Nice to see you Rachelf and thanks for the solid advice, even though I was already on it!!

I think its the motivation part for me. I started playing like a month and a half ago and posted my first progress video two weeks ago. It really pushes me to improve for the next video

Another reason I've discovered is that sometimes you have an idea and it doesn't go anywhere. But a few days, weeks, months, even years down the line, you can look at something you wrote with a new pair of eyes (or I guess ears) with a new perspective. Maybe you've learned some new techniques since then, or you listen to different bands and can slap that influence into an old tune. You never know what "throw-away" riff or chord progression might be useful someday.
tl;dr Become a musical hoarder!

I recorded myself playing yesterday for the first time and it was so awkward. Going to make a habit of it, and hopefully it'll get easier. xD

Hey Rachel, back in the 80s'ish I would record myself over and over on a cassette player to learn "ERUPTION" and I finally got it note for note... 5-6 months later~ only had paper tabs and the album to work off of back then👍

Recording my playing made a massive difference to me, especially in the beginning! I used to make lots of rough recordings of stuff I was working on as well, but I don't make as many of those, but it's really awesome looking back at the progress I've made since then! Now I mainly record full songs and videos for YouTube, and while I don't have a good way to gauge my practice like that, really having to focus and get repeat and perfect my playing for covers or original music is pretty darn good practice (and then again for the video!)

Originally I wanted my first YouTube video to be a 1 year progress video actually, but I never made video for some reason. Maybe now I'm frequently doing stuff I'll make a 3 year progress video instead!

Thanks again Rachel. Another really inspirational piece of advice. I sent my brother two simple video recordings of "bashing along" with real music (at 1 month/4 months) to ask whether he thought I was getting better and one of his feedback comments was that he couldn't really focus on "my guitar" over the proper music. So, I've now started dubbing "my" guitar noises over the proper music so as to be able to attenuate the two tracks so that it's easier for someone else (a critic lol) to "comprehend" what's "my stuff" versus the proper music. AUDACITY is all that's needed to do that (a line out from the AMP into the MIC socket of the PC/laptop and the real music played via speakers/LINE OUT of the PC/lap top. The proper music (*.mp3) is initially imported into Audacity and a short rhythm/ beat track placed at the front. When the "beat section" plays the beats, hit the guitar in-time - this allows you to tweak the recording latency in post processing.
