Scary Facts about Rats: During times of war, Rats become a major danger towards humans. Their eating of c0rpses, evolved into targeting ill, old and incapacitated...which includes babies. During/after the war, a rat invasion was hence a BIG topic. And with modern pest control not really erm "being a thing" yet...people used very interesting tactics.

To make it short: You have to make a rat scream. Its screams of terror signal the other rats to abandon ship -at least temporarily.

So in that sense, "shaking the rat" as pest control is indeed a thing. Also explains the sight of rats pouring into the crib
