Everyone's talking about remaking the game, but i think most forget that an important factor on the horror is the quick camera snaps and the fast deaths (no screamer, no animation, you just die) without those two it would be just a generic horror game

Translating this game to 3D probably won't have the same effect. Rex's vague silhouette that only has teeth and eyes barely defined is way scarier in 6 fps than 60 fps

I think Rex's simplicity goes a long way to what makes him scary. It's something I've thought about a lot when reflecting on what scares me - and the simplicity of Rex's design fits right into that niche. In all honesty, I think a more updated animation with a more realistic dinosaur would look less scary, as Rex's lack of detail does so much for him.

Jumpscares that have no sound and are abruptly cut off by "YOU ARE DEAD" are easily my favorite. This game scratches my itch for obscure awesomeness that I've had for a long while.

There is no contest for me, this IS the scariest game ever. No emotion, no sound, simple sprite art & basic explanations. It goes so far. The tight corridors giving a blastophore like me nightmares. No horror game amounts to the fraction this game does. This is a creepy pasta game far before its time.

1916 actually reminds me of this book I read back in high school. I forgot the title, but the story was literally just "What if Napoleon Bonaparte had dinosaurs?" and the story was about the people fighting off a t-rex in their village. The book was sadly underwhelming to me, but the idea is so stupid that it circles around to being awesome and even horrifying. If anyone knows what I'm talking about, that'd be great!
Sorry for going on a tangent there. This game looks amazing for something from 1981.

The same year this game released there was actually another game that came out and is considered one of the first survival horror games, it's called Uchuu Yusousen Nostromo. I think it's also worth mentioning Clock Tower, sure, Alone in the Dark came out before it, but it's significant nonetheless.

There was an actually very fun remake of this that I can't find anymore, though it didn't have the same low-res creepiness even if it was a much more fun and still very tense game to play
