I grabbed one for rescue work, threw a heavy rubber band around the body. Had an old husky home depot knife that was push button to unlock the blade, wish that was a more standard feature for working at heights

This knife should be immediately recalled

I was using a Gerber remix knife on my harness up until now. I dont think this can happen to it but i realised webbing or a dog bone could reach the blade between the 2 walls of the knife handle. This knife will stay in my bag from now on.

Thats a dumb way to carry a knife anyways.

Yikes... I have that knife for cutting webbing for rap anchors... but i place it in my backpack rather than on my harness.

It's just straight up intuitive to not climb with this knife. I've always hated it! CRKT makes a great lightweight climbing knife that's impossible to open when racked on a carabineer.

Yeah but I use a lockable Opinel that has no chance in hell of opening unless I want it to.

I still don't get why anyone would design a safety knife with a point. Carrying a knife is very prolific in white water and canyoning activities, and there a blunt is the standard.

My climbing knife is a Spyderco. Always knew that hole was for something useful.

Microtech makes a really nice linesman knife. There is a cost associated with such nicety.

Ive used thos knife for years. Definitely good to know this can happen, however, i always assumed it could. Ive used a small piece of cord to keep a rubber band that stays tied around it until i need to use it. For rubber band i actually use old bike tires tubes cut into small round strips. Not as stretchy as a conventional rubber band but ive used them for years without breaking or getting sticky and gummy.

I've been trying to tell people this for years. I climb with a knife, but its a folder with a lock.

This is probably intended to be used with an oval carabiner. I've noticed grigris can do the same on some attachment hardware, though I'm not sure if it impacts performance much or at all. For this knife, I doubt a rubber band would stop this if you're falling on it.

For work i have a pouch on the chest strap of my harness that fits a leatherman pretty well. It's not as light as these knives are but it hasn't stabbed me so far, and the pliers and screwdriver have been very useful many times.

Have climbed with one of these for decades. I thread a piece of cord through the clip loop and clip it onto my rescue crab through that, not the hole. It then can not open in the way shown.

Why does everyone seem to be against just using any old pocket knife with a piece of utility cord running through it?
My Kershaw Misdirect has never accidentally opened
My Benchmade Bugout 535 has never accidentally opened
My Kershaw Reverb has never accidentally opened (even comes with a built in "carabiner" and is super lightweight)
Hell, my no name gas station liner locker knife has never accidentally opened.
The misdirect is the only assisted opener (with liner lock)
The benchmade has an axis lock,
And the other 2 are also liner locks.
All of them have holes for accessory cord.

Is it just because y'all want it to say petzl etc?

So glad you posted this! I have been saying this for years. Also really great example. I keep mine in my med kit!

As an engineer, I'm always asking myself "What could go wrong with my design?"
A strap cutter hook knife is hard to stab yourself with, but it's a real hazard to textiles if the sheath comes off.

That was the reason why I chose a Trango Piranha, it locks on a carabineer. Every person I've pointed this out too is surprised that it doesn't lock closed, only open

I have the First Ascent knife and I thought it was bad that it can kind of open just a little bit when clipped. This is way worse.

Seems like a different carabiner will make that "better". I've had that same model knife on my harnes for a handful of years, w/o issue.
