📜 Siege of Vienna: Tunnel War - The siege presses on from its initial active resistance phase to the long, routine drudgery of survival on the inside and elaborate defense building on the outside: earthworks and revelins designed by Georg Rimpler. Meanwhile, the Ottomans prepared to attack via gunpowder prepared inside mining tunnels.

Winter was coming—that’s what had doomed Suleiman when he’d tried to
take Vienna back in 1529. The bitter cold. The Grand Vizier swore history would not repeat itself. Because soon, his mining tunnels would be ready.

6:30 "The man who had done the most to defend Vienna, would receive, none of the credits". Well he just received extra credits.

So... basically a typical battle of World War 1, two and a half centuries before it started.

Ottoman Miners break away the earth as they dig a tunnel.

Suddenly a hole emerges revealing an Austrian face.

I love how Turks and Austrians in comments just chilling and talking like "ahh you guys fight good, thanks bro you guys defend well..." while everyone around them screams "THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARIVED"

I'm glad you cover the complex defence system of the star fort. Star forts are really genious design that were way too underappreciated today.

just want to say something about that the part with them getting lucky that the wall fell during the changing of the guards.
that was by design. the Ottomans specifically chose that time in the hope that, that way, the explosion would kill much more defenders. it's just that this didn't work as they had hoped.
so, it was not Viennese luck, but Ottoman miscalculation.

I am really glad that you guys are acknowledging everyone. How much effort was put to breach the Vienna and how brave everyone defended their home .
I really can't wait till you say THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED (I am from Poland :) ) . One of them biggest Polish victories that has turned the flow of history itself .

Oh so THAT'S where Games Workshop got inspiration for the Siege of Vraks from!
And the Death Korps of Krieg, but one thing at a time, no?

Incredible how the Viennese managed to hold the wall, being so heavily outnumbered.
Those brave souls saved half of Europe in this last stand. If the Ottomans managed to get inside the walls, they could have resited any counter attack that was about to come.

Pretty sure this was part of the inspiration for the Siege of Minas Tirith and the Battle of Pelennor Fields. In the Map of Middle Earth, Minas Tirith is also the same longitude and latitude as Vienna.

It's like WWI, but with Winged Hussars.
