Veda Vyasa's Mahabharata is a great epic with immense wisdom, stories and myths covering many fields. Bhagwad Gita is a great philosophical part of Mahabharata. Veda Vyasa is imparting great wisdom through the dialogues between Sri Krishna and Arjuna. The author Veda Vyasa asks questions through Arjuna and Veda Vyasa answers through Krishna. There are many other gitas, darshanas, wise stories, hymns and myths of great wisdom in Mahabharata. But, when we tend to read epics like Mahabharata as literal and historical reporting of events (although it might be based on some historical events), we cling to one part of the epic or one character and miss the wider wisdom. In reality, all the dialogues, stories and wisdom in Mahabharata is the wisdom distilled by Veda Vyasa through various characters and events. By taking the various characters and events as literal and factual newspaper-like stories, we forget the fact that it is Bhagwan Veda Vyasa, who is distilling and conveying the vision and wisdom of various rishis and Avatars through various ages in his great epic Mahabharata. That is why Mahabharata is rightly known as the fifth Veda.
