ASCP and the emerging importance of consultant pharmacists

In this podcast with Chad Worz, PharmD. A discussion was made about geriatric pharmacy, evolving around COVID and alternative pharmacy careers. The podcast centred around the emergence of this new field in healthcare. Chad explained that their organization acts as a bridge between the health services and patients with complex needs. The field is focussed towards effective management of patient’s medication. The podcast also covered aspects related to Chad’s career as a consultant pharmacist. Chad reiterated that with the increasing role of consulting pharma, the stereotypes related to the field are being broken which would further encourage the participants in the field. Discussion was also made pertaining to the difference between the Long term pharmacy and consulting pharmacy. Chad explained that even though both of the fields operate in the same level of arena however, long term pharmacy have more to do with the clinical roles and consulting pharmacy is someone who is focussed in the facility. Chad explained that with Covid situation the role of Consulting pharmacist has increased even more. Consulting pharmacists can understand the complications that arise with older patients and can improve their situation with analysis of their medication. Moreover the job is more cognitive oriented, which means that there is no requirement of physical assessment. This makes this field more integrated to technology which catapults it towards innovation through live discussions, webinars and networking among the fellow members. The concluding segment covered aspects relating to Chad’s career and how fellow members push each other to flourish in the market.
