Former court baliff here... for those who are complaining about the attorney being on his phone, he's likely following information filed electronically on the case. Public Defenders are often assigned to cases at the last minute and don't have time to absorb details before court. Attorneys refer to notes often during cases... sometimes on paper, sometimes on their phones.
