At SIMAI2016 we talked with Prof. Alfio Quarteroni about Applied Mathematics in industrial and medical contexts.

Using mathematical models for medicine is a special kind of activity.
First of all data come from individuals and there is an issue of invasivity. You don't want that your models require additional exams on patients, so sometimes you don't have the data you need and you have to develop extra mathematical theory.
Then you carry the responsability of dealing with data coming from humans: you are not playing with numbers, spaces, theories. You know that at the end of the story you have to deliver something that will be helpful for people, and this is quite special.
