I'm BACK, and here to share my passionate thoughts about something that needs to STOP when it comes to vinyl records. Please leave a comment and tell me if you agree.

You may think it's crazy at first... but keep listening... I think my rationale is pretty hard to argue with, but I'm open to all counterpoints!

I am an Musician. When my last album came out, I had it available on vinyl. One person told me they were not going to open it - keep it sealed in their collection. I was extremely disappointed. Why? It was a gatefold. This means they never saw the inside pictures and printed lyrics I put much time creating for everyone to enjoy. And the vinyl sleeve was printed with pictures front and back. Also, the vinyl was 2-colored. This is what makes vinyl way cool over streaming. Physical things to touch, open & explore!

I'm from the school of...buy a record...play the record. It's all about enjoying and owing the music

u know what needs to go? paper inner sleeves. they have 0 advantage at all and they can damage records and get them dusty. poly sleeves have been around forever and they should just be industry standard by now.

Schrodinger’s Record. It’s simultaneously both mint and flawed.

This is so frustrating... Vinyl is meant to be listened to. A sealed copy is just another gating mechanism for collectors. It's silly and should have no bearing on overall value. I completely agree!

If a record is sold sealed, the buyer should assume all risks in connection with defects
because the seller could not possibly know the true condition of the disc without at least taking it out and inspecting it.

Totally agree with your point Matt. However, I feel the first battle should be for all new vinyl to come in poly lined inner sleeves not the cheap nasty paper ones that seem to be the norm nowadays!

I can get on board with this. I've bought so many new records that have had problems with warping, off-center pressing, and non-fill.

I 100% agree with this - I've gotten shrink wrapped vinyl with bent corners and seam splits several times. Drives me absolutely crazy.

When cassette tapes were the new trend (1983 or so), my friend would get all of his new music on tape. I still bought vinyl simply because there was so much more to see. I enjoyed being able to read the lyrics, and see large photos that weren't on the tiny cassette tapes. The benefit of using the cassette tape was it's portability, once the walkman came out. Vinyl was never a trend for me. I prefer it over anything else.

I like what King Gizzard has done with their last few releases, using recycled paper outer sleeves instead of plastic

I think it’s up to the owners to do whatever they want with their vinyl records…personally I don’t mind opening them and listening to them, but it’s pretty neat to think I can also decor my room with vinyl records on my walls.

AGREED. Another reason I hate sealed records is because of how beneficial it is for vinyl scalpers. Selling sealed copies keeps that "Mint" condition, and allows scalpers to immediately flip them for outrageous prices on Discogs, keeping vinyl out of the hands of people who really want to listen/collect and support their favorite artists.

Amen, 100% agree. Also, unless you are purchasing directly from a label, shrink wrap opens up the door to fraud. I doubt it's very common, but I've been to used record shops and thrift stores and found near mint sleeves containing the wrong record. Anyone with access to a shrinkwrap machine could easily seal it up to appear brand new

I was literally just thinking this a couple days ago lol, I slightly bent a corner trying to open a record that was sealed extremely tightly. So annoying

I want a sealed record when it’s new. Sometimes, you find decades-old sealed records in the dollar bins that aren’t filthy and are pristine! I don’t ever plan on selling them and will play them all. Peace.

I bought a deluxe remaster version of a record, still sealed 2lp’s with the second LP being all bonus material. It was factory sealed with the hype sticker and I paid A LOT for it, I don’t keep mine sealed, I open them and listen to them, I opened this one and the second LP was completely missing. Gutted. Was a 2014 reissue so it had been unopened for about 6 years.

Do you have any idea how annoying it is to have to refund someone for a brand new record you sent in the mail and they say it has seam splits ?? it’s unbelievable ….how about if the manufacturer tries making the sleeves out of something a little more durable and then maybe we wouldn’t have to have all these stupid problems!! as far as records go if you’re paying $36 for a record why don’t you try playing it what is the point of buying a record and keeping it sealed ?? absolutely ridiculous

Good point as I would say half the records I get are warped to some extent. It is disheartening when you open a record you have been looking forward to for months and it has scratches, smudges or other defects. I also believe every record should have poly lined sleeves to get rid of the dust and scuffs that come with paper sleeves. Like you said it wouldn’t take much and at the prices vinyl is selling for they can a least give an undamaged product.

I’m so on board. Please ship me a poly bag with the vinyl on the outside.
