The fundraiser tip is GOLD ⭐️! My biggest tip after working retail for 20 year (5 of that Target): if your kiddo doesn’t have a preference on things, don’t take them shopping. It will save you so much time and money to pick out what they need and surprise them at home.

I raised 3 kids, and never gave into the designer game, and my children were happy not to have friends based on things. They are in their mid to late 30s with their own children and still don't play the name brand game. They own quality where it matters, and most was gotten second hand. Momma taught them well.

My children are grown and my son has a large family. I gave him some back to school money last week. They still needed new back packs. Great advice on contacting schools for help Kate! I would add to label kids items well- jackets, water bottles, lunchboxes. Kids can lay things down and lose them easily. Labeling helps get those things back instead of just lost and having to replace.

I also love to spread out shopping. My son is ten and grows the first two weeks of school as if on purpose. I don’t buy any back to school clothes until the first two weeks settle down.

Mom of adult people here. I’m still using rulers and some notebooks from long ago lol. The youngest is in college and a male - no clothes ! They don’t care, won’t wear it. But the $$$ is killer y’all ! College fund young people! Do it now.

Both of my sons have now earned their bachelor’s degree (!!), so this is the first time in 20 years I haven’t done any back-to-school shopping. (Weird…!) One thing I did when they were growing rapidly was to buy the next size up of pants or shirt or whatever when they were on sale/clearance, then stash them away for later. Also, totally agree with buying the best quality items you can afford, especially things like backpacks, shoes, winter outerwear. Lastly, if you pack lunches, ask your kids what they like and don’t like (it changes over time) and do some negotiating over the more expensive and/or less nutritious items. And start teaching them to pack their lunches themselves! Have a great school year, everyone!

Back to School! Great tips. My mom, who is a retired Special Ed teacher in VA, has always shopped at Staples when they have the teacher appreciation weeks. She will also go to Michael's to pick up some craft supplies on sale and uses a coupon. She was always looking around for the best deals and still does, but she never really understood quality products and paying a little more for that product.

I agree with everything you said! The only thing I will add is saying NO. Parents are afraid to say no to their kids. We often feel that it’s our responsibility to give them everything they ask for or we are failures as parents. We need to provide for all their NEEDS of course, but sometimes the disappointment of them hearing no is more valuable then giving them the thing or activity they think they want. If you cannot afford their participation in a sport or activity, say no, with kindness.
