Wow this is amazing. This song is absolutely 100% a nod to the masterpiece film that is Drive. In my opinion this is in the perspective of Irene - talking about Driver, the man who is "the best thing that's ever happened to me"

The lyrics are so obviously connected to the film that it's blown me away.
"Monkeys on their backs, a scorpion's on yours" nodding to the scorpion on Driver's jacket
"you know hearts are black, they can't follow the course" Driver realizes that people all hold on to something, and no one is perfect
"you'd only take a life that was already over to save another" Driver with such love and passion for Irene and her son, takes the responsibility to save her criminal husband, whether that means he dies, in order to bring peace and safety to the family - taking the life of someone with no aim or purpose (Standard) to save the life of the woman he loves
"no guns, or bombs, no knives" Driver says "he doesn't carry a gun, he drives" - Driver doesn't carry weapons
"your hammer, your hands" Driver uses the hammer to intimidate the Strip Club manager in order to find out who the criminals are that set-up the deal gone wrong which led to Standard being killed and nearly himself
"you say you have no name, they say you show no signs" Driver's character does not have a name - nor does he show any emotion or share any details about himself
"and who you are at day, isn't the same in the night" Driver lives a normal, law-abiding life at day, working as a stuntman in Hollywood, but at night he's an emotionally troubled, getaway driver with a dark past haunting him

I know that the author of the book that inspired the film has a sequel "Driven" - but Winding Refn and Gosling have denied every producing a sequel for Drive, but if there ever is a Part 2 to the amazing, life-changing, artistic film, then I hope this song is used in some way.

I put this song on my partner's birth playlist and I remember hearing in the background when we held him for the first time "and you... and you... are the best thing that has ever happened to me". As his first birthday fast approaches, those lyrics have proved themselves to be entirely prophetic.
