Teahupo’o is known as the heaviest wave in the world. Set off the coast of Tahiti Iti, breaking in mere inches of water at times, this wave has become a right of passage for surfers from around the world to survive, if nothing else. Raimana Van Bastolaer grew up in Tahiti and tells the story of his home break, Teahupo’o. Raimana was among the first to surf Teahuopo’o and has been on the forefront of developing new ways to ride the dangerous beauty ever since.

I have no idea who this man is, I came here from a short about a person learning to surf. I see this fellow come roaring in on his knees to perfectly come beside this person and allow them to feel the moment for themselves. Now I am watch and listing to him tell his story and for some reason I am overcome with emotions. This man is a true legend! God Bless him.

I have an irrational fear that the FIRST instant I get into water deeper than I can stand to surf. I will get eaten by a Great White. Can't even close my eyes in the shower while turning the water to cold, or I picture it.
