I received questions regarding the microSD stability and system uptime for Single Board Computer which boot up from the microSD. In this video, let's have a check on the NanoPi R4S running OpenWRT with a Class 4 microSD card from Sandisk. The R4S is located in my room with average temperature of 30°C. At the time of checking, the NanoPi R4S is up and running for almost 20 days with no problem.
For the NanoPi R2S and the Raspberry Pi 4, I didn't run the device long enough to make the video. However, from my records, the R2S and Raspberry Pi 4 has been up and running for more than 10 days with no problem.

Do you have any problem with running OpenWRT from the microSD for those SBC? Please share in the comment!
Thanks for watching and see you in the next video.

Once the system is booted up which performs a read operation from the SD card, there is no need to write or read anything from and to the SD media unless for logging. Logging can be disabled so even that can be eliminated. During operation, everything is run from RAM so the test in this video is more about the durability of the soldered RAM chip than the removable SD card. Or am I missing on how the NanoPi R4S works as a router?

I would think that because OpenWRT is a distribution meant for consumer routers there would be no deliberate write cycles to the system storage by default unless the user specified it. I’m sure consumer routers storage can’t handle lots of write cycles either. It makes sense that the NanoPi distribution wouldn’t be any different. The SD card should only be written to for firmware updates. Thanks for showing this video I like seeing uptime numbers.
