The finite element method (FEM) is the most popular computational tool for analysing the behaviour of many complex engineering problems. The adaptive strategies have been developed to improve the accuracy as well as the efficiency of the FEM or to eliminate possible mesh distortion due to large deformations. In this webinar, Majid will present recent advances in the adaptive FEM strategies as well as their application in a wide range of problems including, but not limited to, soil-structure interaction, dynamics of two- and multi-phase media and penetration problems. Current challenges and future work in this area will also be discussed.

Speaker bio
Majid Nazem received his PhD in Computational Geomechanics from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 2006. He continued to work in Geomechanics Group at the University of Newcastle until December 2015 when he joined RMIT University in Melbourne. Currently Majid is an Associate Professor in the School of Engineering at RMIT University. He is also on the Editorial Board of Computers and Geotechnics. His research areas include the finite element method, meshless analysis methods, computational plasticity, contact mechanics, soil dynamics, soil-structure interaction, and inverse analysis techniques.
