In this video I'm going to show you how to fix clucking or clicking noise that may be coming from your steering wheel. On a lot of Hyundai and Kia made vehicles that coupler that's part of your steering assist motor wears out and goes bad which in turn allows for slack and therefore clunking or noise when you turn your steering wheel. In this video I'll show you how to remove and replace it easily.

You're a G! I'm a Ford diesel technician but doing a favor for my daughter's mom and this video got me through it without winging it and probably saved me from breaking that brake light switch. If you're careful you don't need to remove it just support the back as you bring it down and maneuver around it. 10/10 clutch video.

I did it! I was a bit intimidated by the eleven electrical connections, with their hidden tabs and secret unlocking codes, but I got them all disconnected and then moved on to the steering shaft. Heavy. It's not 25 lbs, but you've gotta get under it to maneuver that tab into place and get the bolt across the holes.
Thank you Ratchets and Wrenches, for the excellent video. I saved myself $450 tonight, and the steering is quiet and smooth once again!

Love your tutorials. Very thorough. I used one of your old video's to do the timing belt on a 2.4ltr Mitsubishi. I had no surprises. you left nothing out. Thankyou!

2 years on and this video was a great help..
The only thing was on a right hand drive, that long bolt can't be pulled out due to the brake pedal bracket interference..
Ended up having to loosen off the brake booster bolts on the firewall and a couple of other bolts to get the bolt past..
Several hours of swearing and blood spilling was spent on this one bolt..
Everything else was spot on
Cheers

Thanks for a well detailed video. It's Saturday Nov, 9th and I just completed this repair, this video was an excellent guide.

One thing to add, on the 2011 Elantra, there's a steel plate that runs along the knee plate under the steering column, there wasn't an airbag to deal with. That steel plate has to come out, and anyone attempting this should consider wearing mechanics gloves, as there's a lot to get cut on. I did sustain some cuts on my hands, but that's part of the job I guess.

This video saved me about $900 in repairs at the shop. Thanks again for a well put together video.

I’ve taken my 2015 to the dealer twice for this noise and they always say it’s fine. The noise literally drives me crazy. I originally thought it was a tie rod or ball joint but this makes so much more sense. I’m still probably going to pay someone else though but great video.

Aha. That's the clunck in my steering wheel of my European Ceed year 2009. Thank you for the tip. I thought it was mechanical problem ball joints, but those are okay. Information for other followers, CEED is the sister car of the Hyundai i30, shares a lot of the same technique. I miss my easy Civic 😂

Thank you for making this video. It saved me a bunch of time trying to figure out the issue and how to correct it. With your help I had the problem solved in under two hours. Thanks again.

Great info!...I have a 2013 Elantra and this clunking problem started at around 60k miles. I found out Hyundai issued an "unknown" TSB about the steering clunk and they extended the warranty for this particular problem for ten years. Took my Elantra to the dealership for the repair last year and they tried to charge me for the repair. I had to show them the TSB and they did the repair in-warranty. At this time, if you have a 2013-2016 Elantra with the steering clunk sound, you should still be able to get the repair done at the dealership in-warranty.

What an awful job that was to do. Hate those kind jobs. I find it easiest to just remove the seat out of the car, only 4 bolts and a connector or two usually. Really helps to have enough room without boiling your blood 🤣 Glad you got it done though friend 💕👍

I had to do that on a Right hand drive Santa Fe, exactly the same but that Pivot Bolt wasn't so easy to get out, had to remove the brake and accelerator pedals. There was also some module in the way which could not be removed but I had to pivot it out of the way. Three tries and many cut knuckles later but I got it right.
